Overview
Mr. Kalina earned his law degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1990 and was called to the Ontario bar in 1992. He received accreditation as a mediator and arbitrator from the University of Waterloo in 1998. With more than three decades of experience, he brings a deep understanding of litigation to every client’s circumstances.
Experience from both sides of the law
From 1998 to 2008, Mr. Kalina also worked as a part-time prosecutor in bail and trial courts. That experience enables him to anticipate how allegations may be prosecuted and to build a vigorous, comprehensive defence based on the evidence and the governing law.
Criminal defence experience
Mr. Kalina has extensive trial experience representing adults and young persons. His work includes impaired and dangerous driving, assault, robbery, break and enter, theft, fraud, drug offences, weapons offences, sexual offences, arson, homicide, extradition and other serious or complex allegations.
Immigration and administrative advocacy
Mr. Kalina has appeared before the Immigration and Refugee Board, Canada Border Services Agency and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. He has acted in admissibility hearings, detention reviews, sponsorship appeals, permanent-resident-status matters, refugee proceedings, humanitarian and compassionate applications, criminal rehabilitation applications and other immigration matters.
Courts and tribunals
He has appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice, Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Court of Appeal for Ontario, Divisional Court and Federal Court of Canada, as well as provincial and federal administrative tribunals.
Leadership and community involvement
Mr. Kalina has lectured colleagues on the immigration consequences of criminal charges and the expungement of criminal records. He has mentored students-at-law and newly called lawyers, assisted high-school mock trial programs in Peel Region and served as a director and vice-president of the John Howard Society of Peel-Halton-Dufferin. His legal work has been featured by the Toronto Star, Toronto Sun, Citytv, Global News, CTV News and community media.
