Sweta Tejpal has over 11 years of practice in criminal and immigration law. She has successfully conducted criminal trials and appeals and has addressed complex immigration matters. Her background in criminology and justice studies shapes a direct, practical approach to defending clients and helping them understand a stressful legal process.
Ms. Tejpal represents clients throughout Ontario. Her work includes domestic assault, drug possession and trafficking, sexual assault, child pornography, homicide and other serious or complex criminal and quasi-criminal matters. She represents individuals and institutional clients at both the trial and appellate levels.
Ms. Tejpal has successfully completed sponsorship appeals, Federal Court judicial reviews and humanitarian and compassionate applications. She understands how overwhelming the immigration system can be and the importance of helping families reunite.
Ms. Tejpal has extensive litigation experience, having appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice, Superior Court of Justice, Court of Appeal for Ontario and Supreme Court of Canada. She has acted as court-appointed counsel, worked as per diem duty counsel in Peel and served as a per diem Crown attorney for Ontario.
As Peel Director for the Criminal Lawyers’ Association, Ms. Tejpal advocates for the defence bar. She has co-chaired the Association’s accessibility committee and participated in its education and Legal Aid committees. She is also chair of the Criminal Law Practice Group of The Advocates’ Society, teaches the Toronto Metropolitan University’s Law Practice Program and is a lawyer supervisor for the University of Toronto victims rights groups. She is president of the Peel Criminal Lawyer's Association.
Ms. Tejpal is a director of the Rotary Club of Flower City, Brampton and Advocates For Etobicoke Youth (AFEY).
